Bills are due, the children are crying and your boss at work seems to be constantly on your case. You find yourself exhausted, your appetite has fallen (or you are over eating) and you cannot seem to get to sleep. These are some of the classic symptom of stress. Stress is the number one killer of both men and women worldwide. While you won’t find it listed as the cause of death, the related maladies are well known: heart failure, migraine headaches, and stroke. So what can you do if you find yourself stressed to the point of exhaustion?
First take stock of the causes of stress in your life. Try to set realistic goals for yourself and reduce the total number of events in your life. After you have streamlined your life and identified the stressful parts of your environment then make sure to remove yourself from stressful situations.
Sometimes it feels like all a person can do that is free is worry. Worrying has never solved a problem and never will. If you find yourself with a large workload, try not to engulf yourself in agonizing over the overall project, but instead, try to handle each task one at a time or be selective and choose a work schedule that allows you flexibility. Prioritize your tasks so that truly important matters are dealt with and let the smaller items slide for awhile.
RELAX! Try some meditation and breathing exercises to help control your stress. Clear your mind of any and all disturbing thoughts. This will help you to focus on a single troublesome stress related problem. Since stress is strictly subjective and subject to an individual’s point of view, it often helps to change the way you view your situation. Look for alternatives in how you approach a particular stressful situation.
Try moderation in your responses. Don’t rage at a particular situation when you can just be angry and move on. It is ok to feel sad (everyone does from time to time) but why turn it into a full blown out depression?
Step out of yourself for awhile and concentrate on others for a while. Sometimes doing something for other people is the best way to help get your mind off of what is vexing you. Sometimes the most selfish act you can perform is to give yourself to others for awhile; it is a great stress reliever!
GET SOME SLEEP! Stress is aggravated by lack of sleep. You cannot function well unless you are fully rested. Most people need their eight hours of rest so make sure that you schedule down time for yourself. But don’t use sleep as an escape from your problems. Sleeping too much is a non productive way to handle stress for when you wake up all your problems will still be there.
